Filter Care & Installation Guide

Filter prep, installation, and cleaning instructions for maximum filtration and uncompromised airflow.

The Process, Simplified

Preparation

Remove excess oil from your new pre-oiled filter before installation.

Installation

Slide on, hand-tighten, and never over torque your hose clamps.

Cleaning

Wash, dry, and re-oil annually for full vehicle service life.

New Filter Preparation

All new PERRIN Foam Filters are pre-oiled at the factory using a bath-and-centrifuge process. Some oil pooling on arrival is expected and must be addressed before installation.

1

Blott

Using clean paper towels, remove all excess oil from the foam media. Lightly compress the foam against the towel to draw out additional oil.
2

Clean

Wipe all rubber surfaces clean of oil.
3

Cone Filters Step

Remove the hose clamps and wipe oil from both clamping surfaces, as well as the interior of the filter. This step is critical to prevent the filter from sliding off the intake or the outer filter separating from the inner cage.
4

Panel Filters Step

Wipe oil from the rubber surround where it interfaces with the intake tube.

Installation Instructions

⚠ Critical: Do Not Overtighten Clamps

Excessive torque can cut into rubber components and cause filter failure. Use only a nut driver or screwdriver — never powered tools. Ensure both clamps are fully loose before beginning installation.

1
Confirm that all excess oil has been removed from the filter per the preparation steps above.
2
With both clamps loose, slide the filter onto the intake tube until the lower clamp rests on the straight section of the intake, not on the tapered portion.
3
Hand-tighten the lower clamp until the filter is secure against sliding. Do not overtighten, as this may damage the filter or cause it to compress off the end of the intake.
4
Hand-tighten the larger clamp securing the filter to the inner cage. Overtightening may cause the clamp to slip or the filter to compress off the intake tube.
5
If the filter continues to slide or compress during tightening, remove it, wipe any remaining oil from the interior rubber base, and repeat the installation process.

Cleaning Instructions

Using the wrong products can damage your filter. Stick to the approved cleaners and oils below.

Approved Cleaners

Foam filter cleaning kits (ATV/powersports retailers) or biodegradable degreasers such as Simple Green.

Approved Oils

Foam-specific filter oil — thick, adhesive, typically spray. K&N-type oils are too thin for foam media.

1
Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including eye and hand protection.
2
Remove the filter from the vehicle. For cone-type filters, the outer filter may be removed from the cage without detaching the full assembly from the intake.
3
Apply foam filter cleaner or degreaser and work it thoroughly into the foam media. Allow it to dwell for five minutes to break down oil and contaminants.
4
Rinse the filter thoroughly and repeat until the rinse water runs clear.
5
Allow the filter to air dry for one to two hours. Compressed air may be used to accelerate drying. Do not use an oven or other heat source.
6
Apply a light, even coat of approved foam filter oil to all foam surfaces and massage it into the media. Repeat this application once before proceeding.
7
Remove any excess oil from the base and clamping surfaces, then reinstall the filter per the installation instructions above.

* Cleaning Interval *

Don't wait until your filter looks dirty. Stay on schedule with these two simple benchmarks.

10,000 Miles

We recommend that your filter should be cleaned at least every 10,000 miles.

1X per Year

Depending on local dust and pollutant levels, we recommend cleaning it at least once a year
